Summer isn’t nearly done, but we’re eagerly anticipating the season of toasty cashmere, Stitched Shirts, and pumpkin spice everything. Last fall, we were content to work from home in sweatpants and fancy PJs, but this year, we’re excited to put together ensembles that are a little more fashion-forward as we gradually start including more restaurant trips, office days, and hangouts with friends into our routine. You can start shopping (and wearing) the top 11 fall fashion trends for fall 2021 now. From Rachel Green’s return as a style icon to Doug Funnie’s signature piece to walking-friendly heels, here’s everything you need to know.

1. ’90s REVIVAL’

It has been a few years since the 90s fashion has made a comeback, but this autumn we expect people to wear these styles from head to toe rather than just as accents. Combining your new baguette bags with sheath dresses, square-toed boots, and cardigans can be a great look for the fall. Alternatively, pair a cropped cardigan with a miniskirt and sneakers with ankle socks. Wear a plaid shacket over skater jeans, a polo tee over adorable overalls, and a white T-shirt under silk slip dresses. When in doubt, channel Rachel Green and you’ll be fine.

Typically, the move from summer to fall means replacing attractive pastels and tropical brights with navy, khaki green, burgundy, and other dark colors. In contrast, the fall colors dominate this year, with hints of brilliant hues. Consider enhanced jewel tones, deep magenta, mustard yellow, and other opulent alternatives. The easiest approach to flaunt this trend is to mix and match unusual color combinations, such as peachy orange and brilliant blue or bubblegum pink and marigold, to create a style that is both vibrant and seasonally appropriate.

As for mom jeans, flares, bootcuts, and boyfriend jeans for fall 2021, we will always be partial to skinny jeans, but looser versions such as mom jeans, flares, and bootcut will be very popular. Mom jeans and loose straight-leg shapes are particularly trendy, as are cross-front waists for an extra playful element. To balance off the additional fabric on the bottom, wear a slim-fit tee with a fitted blazer, cropped sweater, or fine top tucked in.

This Doug Funnie-approved trend debuted in 2020 and is still going strong in Fall 2021. The most popular versions are those with texture and detail, as opposed to plain monotone cashmere, and an oversize fit. While the weather is still nice, consider wearing one with nothing below (save a bra, if desired) and some baggy trousers. As the weather cools, layer your vests over shirt dresses, button-downs, turtlenecks, and perhaps another sweater.

Wrap-around strings on exposed midriffs were seen this summer in bikinis, crop tops, and midi skirts. The trend is taking a simpler turn in autumn, with flashes of skin peeking out between coordinating tops and midi or maxi skirts. You may go bold and display a lot of your centre, as Lorde did in her Solar Power music video, or keep it discreet with a sliver that’s really only visible when you’re moving.

Jeans and pants with snake designs, checkerboard, zebra stripes, and bright florals are everywhere. Unlike the airy wide-leg versions popular in the summer, these renditions are made of heavier, more structured materials such as denim, corduroy, or wool, and have a more tailored fit. Have fun combining them with other colorful prints, or keep it simple and let them stand out beneath a plain black, white, or grey sweater.

Think puffer coat-inspired crossbodies, beautifully woven leather handbags, and ruching galore. Some purses may even incorporate all three. Perhaps our favorite aspect of this trend is that you can literally choose any style you want—a giant tote that holds your laptop, a mid-size crossbody for weekend errands, or a tiny one that fits only the essentials for a night out. The most fashionable bags are made of monotone leather, but that doesn’t mean you can’t wear a puffed-up nylon clutch or a ruched zebra-print shoulder bag.

While the majority of the colors you’ll see this fall are much more intense and rich, you’ll also notice a lot of soft lilac and lavender. During fashion month, the lovely color appeared on runways in every city, including Lacoste, Salvatore Ferragamo, Jonathan Simkhai, and Roksanda, and in a range of shapes. Consider pairing one or two statement pieces with other shades or essentials, like a lavender jacket, wide-leg pants, or a gorgeous midi dress.

Flatform espadrilles and ‘90s-inspired sandals were among the most popular shoe designs this Summer Collection 2021, and the elevated styles will undoubtedly continue into the fall and winter. Platform loafers and lace-up boots, as well as clogs and ’70s-style heels, can give you a fashionable boost while being much simpler to walk in than stilettos (thank god).

We haven’t been out and about in over a year, and now we intend to live it up—at least, that’s the idea behind “revenge dressing.” People are taking out the most fun, spectacular things from their closets, such as NYE-ready sequins and other shiny metallics, and wearing them anywhere they want, from coffee dates to breakfast to a quick trip to the grocery store. The easiest way to wear these bold fabrics is to mix them with super casual essentials like a white button-down, raw-hem denim, or a simple T-shirt.

The most trending styles of the year 2021 have all been highlighted above. We all know that one of the best things about the summer collection 2021 was its stitched shirts that spoke themselves and were a fashion statement.
